About the Ford Bronco II
Introduced for the 1984 model year, the Ford Bronco II was a compact SUV designed to compete with the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer and Jeep Cherokee. Based on the Ford Ranger chassis, it featured a short 94-inch wheelbase and a narrow track, providing excellent off-road maneuverability but also leading to a controversial reputation for rollover instability. The early 2.8-litre Cologne V6 was carburetted and offered modest performance, though it was praised for its tight turning circle and rugged Twin Traction Beam front suspension. While often overshadowed by its full-sized sibling, the Bronco II was a massive commercial success that paved the way for the segment-defining Ford Explorer.

- Despite being a compact SUV, it used a heavy-duty body-on-frame construction shared with the Ford Ranger pickup.
- Early rear-wheel-drive models still included a 4WD transfer case that was simply sealed off, likely to maintain a common assembly process.
