About the Citroën GS

Launched to bridge the gap between the utilitarian 2CV and the executive DS, the Citroën GS was a technological tour de force for the small family car segment. It featured a sophisticated self-levelling hydropneumatic suspension system and all-round disc brakes, providing a ride quality that shamed far more expensive rivals. The 1220 Club trim, introduced in 1972, addressed early criticisms of being underpowered by fitting a larger 1,222cc air-cooled boxer engine. Its sleek, Robert Opron-designed fastback body achieved a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.318, helping it secure the 1971 European Car of the Year title.

Citroën GS fun facts

  • The GS features a 'Cyclops-eye' speedometer, where a rotating drum is viewed through a magnifying glass, alongside a 'boomerang' style tachometer.
  • To maintain a low centre of gravity and improve weight distribution, the front disc brakes are mounted inboard next to the gearbox rather than at the wheels.
  • The spare wheel is located directly on top of the engine under the bonnet, a space-saving measure made possible by the compact flat-four layout.
