About the Citroën AX GTi
Launched in 1991 as the range-topping performance variant of the facelifted AX, the GTi replaced the earlier GT and Sport models with a more refined but equally manic character. Weighing less than 800kg, it utilised the 1.4-litre TU3 engine with multi-point fuel injection to deliver a power-to-weight ratio that shamed many larger contemporary sports cars. It is distinguished by its fully painted plastic wheel arch flares, unique multi-spoke alloy wheels, and a revised interior featuring a more substantial dashboard than the flimsy pre-facelift versions. Collectors prize the GTi for its telepathic steering and the pure, unassisted driving experience that defined Citroën's lightweight engineering philosophy of the 1990s.
