About the Lotus Europa
The Lotus Europa Twin Cam, introduced in 1971, finally gave the radical mid-engined 'breadvan' the performance its chassis deserved. By replacing the original Renault engine with the Lotus-Ford 1.6-litre unit, Lotus transformed the car into a genuine 117 mph sports car with handling that remains a benchmark for steering feel and balance. The Twin Cam (Type 74) also featured a revised bodyshell with lowered rear buttresses to improve the notoriously poor rearward visibility. It represents a pivotal moment in Lotus history, bridging the gap between the minimalist S1/S2 models and the more powerful 'Big Valve' Special that followed.

Lotus Europa fun facts
- The Europa's distinctive high-sided rear bodywork earned it the nickname 'the breadvan' among enthusiasts.
- Early Europa S1 models had their fibreglass bodies bonded directly to the steel chassis, making repairs so difficult that Lotus switched to a bolted design for later models like the Twin Cam.
- The Europa was one of the world's first mid-engined road cars, appearing just after the Lamborghini Miura but aimed at a much more attainable market.
