About the Chevrolet Chevelle SS
The 1970 Chevelle SS 454, specifically when equipped with the RPO LS6 engine, represents the absolute peak of the original muscle car wars. It was the only production GM vehicle of the era to be factory-rated with more horsepower than the contemporary Corvette, featuring a solid-lifter big-block with an 11.25:1 compression ratio. The car is distinguished by its 'Cowl Induction' hood, which used a vacuum-actuated flap to draw cool air from the base of the windshield. Collectors prize the LS6 for its brutal straight-line performance and its status as the most powerful regular production muscle car of its time.

Chevrolet Chevelle SS fun facts
- The LS6's 450 hp rating was the highest factory output of any car from the original muscle car era, though many period dyno tests suggested it actually produced over 500 hp.
- The functional Cowl Induction hood featured a rear-facing flap that would snap open under full throttle to feed the 800-cfm Holley carburetor.
- While 4,475 LS6 engines were produced in 1970, this total includes units installed in the El Camino SS, making the Chevelle Sport Coupe and Convertible even rarer.
