About the Chevrolet Lumina
Launched for the 1990 model year, the Chevrolet Lumina was General Motors' long-awaited aerodynamic response to the Ford Taurus. Built on the GM10 (W-body) platform, it replaced both the Celebrity and the Monte Carlo, consolidating Chevy's mid-size offerings into a single nameplate. The 3.1-litre V6 was the volume engine choice, offering smooth but modest performance paired with a traditional three-speed automatic. While criticized for its late arrival and lack of safety features like airbags, the Lumina became a massive commercial success and a dominant force in NASCAR, famously driven to multiple championships by Dale Earnhardt.

Chevrolet Lumina fun facts
- The Lumina name was almost used by Ford for the Taurus; GM reportedly secured the trademark just before Ford could.
- Despite being a front-wheel-drive family car, the Lumina served as Chevrolet's NASCAR body from 1989 to 1994, winning four championships with Dale Earnhardt.
- The Lumina's rear suspension used a transverse-mounted fiberglass leaf spring, a design approach shared with the C4 Corvette.
