About the BYD M6

The BYD M6 debuted at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show as the brand's first foray into the MPV market. It gained international notoriety for its striking resemblance to the third-generation Toyota Previa, sharing nearly identical exterior proportions and a 'bullet' silhouette. This 2.4-litre variant utilised a Mitsubishi-sourced 4G69 engine, providing modest performance for a seven-seater. While it offered a significantly lower price point than its Japanese inspiration, sales remained largely confined to the Chinese domestic market before the nameplate was resurrected for an electric successor in 2024.

BYD M6 fun facts

  • The M6 was so similar to the Toyota Previa that many parts, including body panels and glass, were reportedly interchangeable between the two vehicles.
  • Despite its large size and executive positioning, the 2.4-litre model was initially paired with an aging 4-speed automatic transmission.
  • The car's name caused minor friction with BMW enthusiasts, as it shared the 'M6' designation with the German manufacturer's high-performance grand tourer.
