About the BYD Tang
Launched in 2015, the first-generation BYD Tang was a landmark vehicle for the Chinese automotive industry, debuting as one of the most powerful hybrid SUVs in the world. It was the flagship of BYD's '542' strategy, which mandated a 0–100 km/h time under 5 seconds, 4-wheel drive, and fuel consumption under 2 litres per 100 km. The powertrain combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two high-output electric motors, one on each axle, providing a combined 505 hp. While based on the older S6 chassis, its straight-line performance challenged established European luxury SUVs, though it was often criticised for its high kerb weight and unrefined handling. It remains a significant piece of EV history as the world's best-selling plug-in hybrid in 2016.
