About the Bugatti Type 101
The Type 101 was Bugatti's final effort to restart production after World War II and the death of Ettore Bugatti. Based heavily on the pre-war Type 57 chassis, it featured a 3.3-litre straight-eight engine and updated hydraulic brakes, but its outdated solid-axle suspension struggled to compete with modern post-war designs. Only six new chassis were built, with a few additional Type 57 conversions, each wearing bespoke coachwork from firms like Gangloff, Antem, and Guilloré. Despite its elegance and heritage, the Type 101 failed to find a market, marking the end of the original Bugatti family era.

Bugatti Type 101 fun facts
- The Type 101 was so expensive that its launch price was roughly double that of a contemporary luxury car, contributing to its commercial failure.
- One of the most famous Type 101s is the 1965 Ghia Roadster, designed by Virgil Exner on the last remaining chassis in a final, unsuccessful attempt to revive the brand.
- The engine is a direct descendant of the Type 57 unit, featuring twin overhead camshafts and a gear-driven valvetrain at the rear of the block.
