About the Autobianchi Primula
Introduced at the 1964 Turin Motor Show, the Autobianchi Primula was a radical departure for the Fiat Group and a pioneer of the modern family car layout. Designed by Dante Giacosa, it featured a transverse engine with an end-on gearbox, a configuration that proved more space-efficient than the Mini's 'gearbox-in-sump' design. It was also remarkably advanced for its class, featuring disc brakes on all four wheels and a practical hatchback body. Though produced in relatively small numbers as a testbed for Fiat's future front-wheel-drive models like the 128, its engineering legacy defines almost every modern compact car today.
