About the Audi S1 8X
The Audi S1 (8X) represents a rare moment of engineering indulgence in the supermini segment, shoehorning a 2.0-litre EA888 engine and a complex multi-link rear suspension into the compact A1 chassis. Unlike its larger siblings, it was offered exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox, catering directly to driving enthusiasts. The addition of a Haldex-based quattro system provided all-weather traction that its front-wheel-drive rivals lacked, though it added significant weight and reduced boot space. It remains a cult favourite for its punchy delivery and the novelty of being the smallest series-production quattro model ever made.

Audi S1 8X fun facts
- The S1 was the only car in the A1 range to feature a multi-link rear suspension, a necessity to accommodate the quattro all-wheel-drive hardware.
- Despite the 'S1' name, it is not a direct successor to the 1980s Group B rally monster, but rather a performance flagship for the road-going A1 line.
- The S1 was never officially sold in the North American market, making it a forbidden fruit for US-based Audi enthusiasts.
