About the Ariel Atom 1
The Ariel Atom 1 arrived in 2000 as a radical departure from traditional sports cars, featuring a distinctive exposed tubular exoskeleton designed by Niki Smart. Powered by a mid-mounted 1.8-litre Rover K-Series engine, it prioritised extreme weight saving over raw power, resulting in a kerb weight of just 456kg. This purity of purpose delivered a visceral driving experience with no doors, roof, or windscreen, connecting the driver directly to the road. While later Honda-powered versions gained more fame, the original Atom 1 established the blueprint for the modern track-day special.
