About the Volvo 480

The 480 was a radical departure for Volvo, marking the brand's first foray into front-wheel drive and featuring a distinctive 'shooting-brake' hatchback design inspired by the 1800ES. Developed in the Netherlands, it targeted a younger demographic with its pop-up headlights, four individual bucket seats, and an advanced Electronic Information Centre. While the Renault-sourced 1.7-litre engine provided modest performance, the car was praised for its sharp handling and excellent ergonomics. Today, it is a cult classic valued for its quirky 1980s aesthetics and historical significance as a Volvo outlier.

Volvo 480 fun facts

  • The 480 was the only Volvo model ever produced to feature pop-up headlights, a design choice necessitated by US bumper height regulations.
  • Despite its sporty appearance, the 1.7-litre engine was a naturally aspirated unit sourced from Renault and tuned by Porsche for better torque delivery.
  • A convertible version was fully developed and shown at the 1990 Geneva Motor Show, but it never reached production due to concerns over the bankruptcy of a key supplier.
