About the Volkswagen Type 181
Originally developed for the West German Army as a stopgap for the stalled Europa Jeep project, the Type 181 is a utilitarian icon based on the mechanicals of the Beetle and the floorpan of the Karmann Ghia. Known as the 'Thing' in the US and the 'Trekker' in the UK, it features removable doors, a fold-down windscreen, and a hose-out interior designed for rugged versatility. The 1973 model year marked a significant mechanical transition, replacing the earlier bus-derived reduction-gear portal axles with a more modern semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension. While its 46-horsepower air-cooled engine offers leisurely performance, its lightweight construction and rear-engine traction make it a surprisingly capable and charming off-roader.
