About the Tata Sumo
Launched in 1994, the Tata Sumo was one of India's first indigenously designed passenger vehicles, specifically engineered to tackle the country's demanding rural terrain. Named after Sumant Moolgaokar, the architect of Tata Motors, it utilised the robust X2 body-on-frame platform shared with the Telcoline pickup. Its boxy, utilitarian design and ten-seater capacity made it an instant success for both military use and large families. While the 2.0-litre Peugeot-derived diesel engine offered modest performance, its legendary durability and ease of repair cemented its status as a cultural icon in Indian motoring history.
