About the Toyota GT86 ZN6
Launched in 2012 as a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru, the GT86 (ZN6) was designed to recapture the spirit of the AE86 Corolla. It features a Subaru-sourced 2.0-litre 'boxer' engine equipped with Toyota's D-4S dual-injection system, mounted low to achieve a centre of gravity comparable to many supercars. The chassis was intentionally fitted with low-grip tyres from the Prius to encourage accessible oversteer and driver engagement at legal speeds. While often criticised for a mid-range torque dip, its precise steering and balanced handling made it an instant favourite among enthusiasts and a benchmark for affordable sports cars.

Toyota GT86 ZN6 fun facts
- The '86' name is a triple homage: to the AE86 chassis code, the 86mm x 86mm square bore and stroke of the engine, and the 86mm diameter of the chrome exhaust tips.
- Chief engineer Tetsuya Tada famously insisted the car should not be fitted with a turbocharger to maintain linear throttle response and lower weight.
- The GT86's centre of gravity is just 460mm above the ground, which is lower than a Nissan GT-R and even a Porsche Cayman of the same era.
