About the Subaru Pleo RA1
Launched in 1998 to meet Japan's revised kei car regulations, the Subaru Pleo RA1 was a sophisticated entry in the 'tall wagon' segment. Unlike many competitors that used three-cylinder engines and beam axles, the Pleo featured a smooth EN07 four-cylinder engine and four-wheel independent suspension, providing superior ride quality and handling. The RA1 trim often utilised Subaru's 'mild-charge' supercharging system, designed to provide the torque characteristics of a 1.0-litre engine while remaining within the 660cc tax bracket. It remains a cult favourite for its mechanical uniqueness and surprisingly premium engineering for its class.
