About the Studebaker Champion

The 1947 Studebaker Champion was a landmark in American automotive history, marketed as the first truly new post-war design. Penned by Raymond Loewy and Virgil Exner, its 'ponton' styling and wrap-around rear window (on Starlight models) made it look years ahead of the warmed-over pre-war designs from the Big Three. It was engineered with a 'weight is the enemy' philosophy, making it exceptionally light and fuel-efficient for its era. While not powerful, its flathead six is famously durable, having been proven in the M29 Weasel during the war.
