About the Oldsmobile Delta 88
The 1977 Delta 88 marked a pivotal moment for Oldsmobile, spearheading General Motors' massive downsizing programme for its full-size B-body platform. Despite being nearly 900 lbs lighter and a foot shorter than its predecessor, it offered improved interior packaging and better fuel efficiency without sacrificing the traditional 'Rocket' V8 character. The 5.7-litre (350 cu in) engine provided smooth, torque-rich cruising that defined the brand's near-luxury identity. Today, it is valued by collectors for its clean, formal styling and as a symbol of Detroit's successful adaptation to the post-oil-crisis era.
