About the Oldsmobile Aurora
Launched to save the struggling Oldsmobile brand, the Aurora was a radical departure from its predecessors, featuring a sleek, aerodynamic design inspired by the 1989 Tube Car concept. It was built on the rigid G-body platform, which famously broke GM's testing machine during torsional rigidity trials. Under the bonnet sits a 4.0-litre version of Cadillac's Northstar V8, delivering smooth power to the front wheels. While it failed to save the marque, the first-generation Aurora remains a high-water mark for 1990s American luxury engineering, noted for its exceptional build quality and distinctive, badge-free styling.

Oldsmobile Aurora fun facts
- The Aurora's body was so stiff that it broke General Motors' testing machine, requiring a heavy-duty rig normally reserved for truck frames.
- To distance the car from Oldsmobile's 'stodgy' image, the brand's name appeared nowhere on the exterior; only a stylized 'A' emblem was used.
- The 4.0-litre L47 V8 engine was a smaller-displacement derivative of the Cadillac Northstar, specifically developed to meet the Aurora's target specifications.
