About the Oldsmobile Aurora
The second-generation Oldsmobile Aurora was a more conservative follow-up to the radical 1995 original, designed to broaden the brand's appeal as General Motors prepared to phase out the division. This 3.5-litre variant introduced the 'Shortstar' LX5 V6, a DOHC engine derived from the Cadillac Northstar V8, offering a more refined and rev-happy character than typical American pushrod engines of the era. Built on the stiff G-body platform, it delivered a composed, European-influenced ride that prioritised high-speed stability and structural integrity. While it lacked the visual drama of the first generation, it remains a technically interesting piece of Oldsmobile's twilight years.

Oldsmobile Aurora fun facts
- The 3.5-litre LX5 engine was nicknamed the 'Shortstar' because it was essentially a Cadillac Northstar V8 with two cylinders removed.
- During development of the first-generation Aurora, the body was so rigid that it reportedly broke GM's standard frame-crushing test machine.
- The second-generation Aurora was roughly six inches shorter than the original model to better align with the rest of the Oldsmobile lineup.
