About the Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin
The Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin, known as the Pajero iO in Japan, was a compact SUV designed to bridge the gap between small hatchbacks and full-sized off-roaders. Styled by the Italian design house Pininfarina, it was also manufactured at their factory near Turin to better suit European tastes. The 1.8-litre model offered a more accessible entry point than the GDI versions, featuring a simpler permanent four-wheel-drive system rather than the sophisticated Super Select setup. While it lacked the refinement of modern crossovers, its genuine off-road capability and compact dimensions made it a unique proposition in the late 1990s.

Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin fun facts
- The 'Pinin' suffix was a tribute to Pininfarina, who not only designed the car's exterior but also handled the European production assembly.
- In Japan, the car was marketed as the Pajero iO, where 'iO' is Italian for 'me', suggesting a personal and easy-to-drive nature.
- Despite its small size, the Pinin retained a rugged ladder-frame-like monocoque construction, giving it better durability off-road than many contemporary rivals.
