About the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 R231
The R231-generation SL 63 marked a significant shift for the nameplate, adopting an all-aluminium bodyshell that shed 125kg compared to its predecessor. Power comes from the M157 5.5-litre biturbo V8, replacing the legendary naturally aspirated 6.2-litre unit with a focus on massive low-end torque and improved efficiency. It features the AMG Speedshift MCT transmission, which replaces a traditional torque converter with a wet start-up clutch for sharper responses. While it remains a consummate long-distance cruiser, the R231's reduced mass and Active Body Control suspension provide surprisingly agile handling for a car of its stature.
