About the Jeep Jeepster Commando
Revived by Kaiser Jeep in 1966, the Jeepster Commando (C101) was designed to compete with the burgeoning recreational 4x4 market led by the Ford Bronco and International Scout. It utilised the 101-inch wheelbase of the CJ-6 but offered significantly more refinement, including roll-up windows and a variety of body styles like the station wagon, convertible, and pickup. The 'Dauntless' V6, a Buick-derived engine, was the most desirable option, providing double the power of the base four-cylinder. While it lacked the hardcore utility of the CJ, its blend of off-road capability and passenger-car comfort makes it a pioneer of the modern SUV segment.

Jeep Jeepster Commando fun facts
- The 'Dauntless' V6 was actually a Buick design; Kaiser-Jeep bought the tooling from General Motors to give the Commando a competitive power advantage.
- Jeep marketed the Commando as the 'Two-Car Car' to highlight its ability to serve as both a rugged workhorse and a stylish family runabout.
- The C101 generation is easily distinguished from the later AMC-era C104 by its traditional seven-slot Jeep grille, which was replaced by a full-width design in 1972.
