About the IFA F9
The IFA F9 was the first new passenger car produced in East Germany following World War II, based directly on the unreleased 1939 DKW F9 prototype. It featured a distinctive streamlined steel body and a longitudinal three-cylinder two-stroke engine, a configuration that would define East German motoring for decades. Production began in Zwickau before moving to Eisenach in 1953, where it was eventually succeeded by the Wartburg 311. While technically advanced for its time with front-wheel drive, it remains a rare sight outside of former Eastern Bloc countries.

IFA F9 fun facts
- The F9's body was so aerodynamic for its era that it achieved a drag coefficient of approximately 0.42, which was highly impressive in 1950.
- Because the DKW F9 designs were developed before the war, the West German Auto Union produced a nearly identical-looking car called the DKW F89.
- The three-cylinder two-stroke engine used in the F9 was the direct ancestor of the engines found in the later Wartburg 311 and 353 models.
