About the Ford Tempo
Launched in 1983 for the 1984 model year, the Ford Tempo was a radical departure from the boxy Fairmont it replaced, embracing a 'jellybean' aerodynamic profile that achieved a drag coefficient of 0.37. It was one of the first American cars developed using extensive computer-aided design (CAD) and featured a fully independent suspension, a rarity for its class at the time. The GL trim served as the mid-range offering, powered by the 2.3-litre High Swirl Combustion (HSC) engine designed for fuel efficiency rather than performance. While often overlooked today, the Tempo was a massive commercial success, selling over 400,000 units in its first year and paving the way for the landmark 1986 Ford Taurus.
