About the Ford Popular 100E
The 100E-generation Ford Popular was launched in 1959 as a budget-friendly entry-level model, replacing the aging 'sit-up-and-beg' 103E. While it utilised the modern monocoque bodyshell of the outgoing Anglia 100E, it was significantly stripped of equipment to maintain its position as Britain's cheapest car. It is historically significant for being the last British Ford to be powered by the venerable 1,172cc sidevalve engine, which had debuted in the 1930s. Driving a Popular is a lesson in period economy motoring, featuring a three-speed gearbox without synchromesh on first gear and vacuum-operated windscreen wipers that famously slowed down under heavy acceleration.

Ford Popular 100E fun facts
- The 100E Popular was so basic that even a heater and a passenger sun visor were optional extras on the standard trim.
- Despite its budget status, it featured modern MacPherson strut front suspension, a significant advancement over its predecessor's beam axle.
- The vacuum-powered wipers were driven by the engine's manifold vacuum, meaning they would often stop moving entirely when the driver floored the throttle to climb a hill.
