About the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning
Developed by Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT), the second-generation Lightning transformed the F-150 into a genuine sports machine. It featured a heavy-duty 4R100 automatic transmission and a supercharged Triton V8 that delivered 360 hp, a massive figure for a truck in 1999. The chassis was significantly reworked with a lowered stance, Bilstein dampers, and a unique five-spoke wheel design wrapped in bespoke Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber. While it retained a 5,000 lb towing capacity, its true purpose was on-road dominance, famously appearing on the cover of Car and Driver as the first pickup to do so.

Ford F-150 SVT Lightning fun facts

- To handle the high torque, Ford used the 4R100 automatic transmission normally reserved for the heavy-duty F-350 diesel trucks.
- The side-exit exhaust was a signature styling cue, but it also served to keep the pipes clear of the lowered rear suspension components.
