About the Fiat 500 Topolino

Introduced in 1936, the Fiat 500 'Topolino' was one of the world's smallest mass-produced cars and a masterpiece of packaging by engineer Dante Giacosa. Its nickname, meaning 'Little Mouse', was inspired by its rounded front end and circular headlights that resembled Disney's Mickey Mouse. To save space and cost, the tiny four-cylinder engine was mounted ahead of the front axle with the radiator positioned behind it, allowing for a low, aerodynamic nose. Despite its diminutive size and modest 13 hp, it featured sophisticated engineering for its time, including independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes.

Fiat 500 Topolino fun facts

  • The Topolino's radiator used a thermosyphon system, which relied on natural convection rather than a water pump to circulate coolant.
  • Early models are known as 'balestra corta' (short crossbow) due to their short quarter-elliptic rear springs, which were later lengthened to improve the ride.
  • The car was so small that owners frequently squeezed four or five people into the nominally two-seater cabin, leading Fiat to eventually offer a four-seater version.
