About the Fiat 1200

Introduced at the 1957 Turin Motor Show, the Fiat 1200 Granluce was an upmarket evolution of the 1100/103 series. Its name, meaning 'Great Light', refers to the airy greenhouse featuring a wider windscreen and panoramic rear window, a significant stylistic shift toward 1960s modernism. Under the bonnet sat a 1,221cc engine, a bored-out version of the 1100 unit that offered improved refinement and a top speed of 86 mph. While mechanically simple, the Granluce was distinguished by its two-tone paint and lavish chrome detailing, serving as a bridge between utilitarian post-war transport and the luxury saloons of the following decade.

Fiat 1200 fun facts

  • The Granluce was developed by Fiat's 'Carrozzerie Speciali' department, which focused on low-volume and premium variants.

  • Early publicity photos showed the car with rear-hinged 'suicide' doors, but the production version used conventional front-hinged doors.
