About the Citroën Visa

Launched in 1985 to give Citroën a contender in the booming hot hatch market, the Visa GTi borrowed its 1.6-litre XU5J powertrain from the legendary Peugeot 205 GTi. While it shared the same engine and slick five-speed gearbox, the Visa featured a unique five-door body with distinctive plastic wheel arch extensions to accommodate a wider front track. The 1986 model year saw power increase from 105 PS to 115 PS, matching the updated 205 GTi and providing spirited performance in a lightweight 870 kg package. Despite its excellent ride and handling, it remained a rare sight compared to its Peugeot sibling, making it a highly sought-after cult classic today.

Citroën Visa fun facts

  • The Visa GTi features a unique quad-headlamp front end, distinguishing it from the single-unit lamps found on standard Visa models.
  • To fit the Peugeot 1.6-litre engine, Citroën had to use the wider front subframe and suspension components from the Visa Diesel.
  • While the Peugeot 205 GTi was strictly a three-door, the Visa GTi offered greater practicality as a dedicated five-door performance hatch.
