About the Chery QQ S11
Launched in 2003, the Chery QQ (S11) is one of the most significant vehicles in Chinese automotive history, credited with making car ownership accessible to the masses. It gained international notoriety due to a copyright dispute with General Motors, who alleged the car was a direct copy of the Daewoo Matiz (Chevrolet Spark), with doors and components that were reportedly interchangeable. Despite the legal controversy, its extremely low price and 'smiling' face made it a cultural icon in China, where it was marketed as the first car for young people. Mechanically, the 0.8-litre triple is modest, prioritising urban fuel economy over performance, and it remains a symbol of the early, aggressive growth phase of the Chinese domestic car industry.
