About the Checker Marathon
The Checker Marathon is the civilian version of the iconic A11 taxicab that dominated the streets of New York City for decades. Built by the Checker Motors Corporation in Kalamazoo, Michigan, it utilised a rugged body-on-frame construction that remained largely unchanged from 1960 until 1982. By 1975, the Marathon adopted Chevrolet's 350 cubic-inch V8 to meet emissions standards, prioritising low-end torque and reliability for high-mileage service. It is celebrated by collectors for its utilitarian charm, immense rear legroom, and its status as a symbol of mid-century American urban life.

Checker Marathon fun facts
- The Marathon's basic styling was derived from a 1956 design, making it one of the longest-running automotive shapes in American history.
- Checker did not follow the industry practice of annual styling changes, meaning a 1960 model looks nearly identical to a 1982 model.
- The rear passenger compartment was designed to be large enough for a passenger to enter while wearing a top hat, a legacy of its taxi heritage.
