About the BMW M135i F40
The F40-generation M135i marked a radical departure for BMW's hot hatch, moving from the celebrated rear-wheel-drive, straight-six formula of its predecessor to a front-biased all-wheel-drive platform with a transverse four-cylinder engine. While purists lamented the loss of the N55/B58 soundtrack, the new architecture provided significantly more interior space and a more modern, tech-heavy cabin. Performance remains potent thanks to the B48 engine—BMW's most powerful four-cylinder at launch—and a standard Torsen limited-slip differential on the front axle. It competes directly with the Audi S3 and Volkswagen Golf R, offering a composed and highly capable, if less tail-happy, driving experience.
