About the Autozam AZ-1
The Autozam AZ-1 is perhaps the most radical of the 'ABC' trio of Japanese Kei sports cars, featuring a mid-engine layout and dramatic gull-wing doors. Designed by Mazda but powered by a Suzuki-sourced turbocharged triple, it was engineered to provide a pure, lightweight driving experience within strict Japanese dimensions. Its steel tube frame and plastic body panels result in a kerb weight of just 720kg, making the modest 64hp output feel remarkably urgent. Despite its exotic looks, it was a commercial failure during the Japanese asset price bubble burst, leading to its rarity today.

Autozam AZ-1 fun facts
- The AZ-1's gull-wing doors are so large that they incorporate most of the roof, meaning they cannot be opened in low-clearance garages.
- Because the windows are fixed into the gull-wing structure, only a tiny 'ticket window' section at the bottom of the glass actually opens.
- The car was originally a Suzuki design project called the RS/1, but Suzuki eventually passed the project to Mazda to produce under their Autozam marque.
