About the Austin Montego
Launched in 1984 to replace the Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador, the Montego was British Leyland's attempt to challenge the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier. The 1.6 L trim featured the then-new S-Series engine and a Volkswagen-sourced gearbox, offering competitive performance and class-leading interior space. Despite its practical design and advanced features like a talking dashboard on higher trims, the model suffered from a long development cycle and early reliability issues. Today, it has gained a cult following as a star of the 'Festival of the Unexceptional', with survivors becoming increasingly rare due to low rust resistance and high scrappage rates.
