About the Yugo Sana

The Yugo Sana, known domestically as the Zastava Florida, was the Yugoslavian firm's most ambitious project, intended to compete with the Fiat Tipo and Volkswagen Golf. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, it featured a modern aerodynamic shape and a spacious interior that outclassed many Western rivals for the price. Power came from a Fiat-sourced 1.4-litre 'Lampredi' engine, though build quality and reliability remained significant weaknesses. Production was severely disrupted by the Yugoslav Wars and NATO bombing, leading to its withdrawal from export markets by 1993, though it remained in low-volume production in Serbia until 2008.

Yugo Sana fun facts

  • The car was marketed as the Yugo Sana in the UK, but was known as the Florida in most other markets to celebrate Yugo's success in the United States.
  • Despite its budget reputation, the Sana's drag coefficient of 0.32 was highly competitive for a family hatchback in the late 1980s.
  • The UK importer, Zastava GB, went out of business in 1993 due to economic sanctions, leaving the Sana as a rare sight on British roads today.
