Originally conceived as a promotional tool to showcase the modularity of the third-generation (6N) Polo, the Harlekin was never intended for production. However, overwhelming public demand following its 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show debut forced Volkswagen to release a limited run. Each car was built in a single base colour—Chagall Blue, Flash Red, Ginster Yellow, or Pistachio Green—before panels were hand-swapped on the production line.
