About the Vauxhall Ampera
The Vauxhall Ampera was a landmark vehicle in the transition to electrification, winning the 2012 European Car of the Year award. Unlike traditional hybrids, its wheels are always driven electrically, with the 1.4-litre petrol engine acting solely as a generator once the 16kWh lithium-ion battery is depleted. It offered a real-world electric range of around 25-50 miles, effectively eliminating range anxiety for early adopters. While technically advanced and refined to drive, high initial purchase prices limited its commercial success in the UK market.
