About the Standard Vanguard
The Standard Vanguard Phase I was a clean-sheet design intended to replace all previous Standard models with a single 'world car' capable of export success. Its distinctive slab-sided styling was heavily influenced by the 1942 Plymouth, marking a radical departure from pre-war British automotive design. The car's 2.1-litre engine was so robust that it was later adapted for use in the Ferguson TE20 tractor and the Triumph TR series of sports cars. While it offered a comfortable ride and generous interior space for six, its handling was typical of the era, prioritising durability over agility.
