Renault R27

About the Renault R27

Designed under Bob Bell and Pat Symonds as the successor to the double championship-winning R26, the R27 looked much like its predecessor but could not match it. Giancarlo Fisichella and rookie Heikki Kovalainen were generally slower than Ferrari, McLaren and BMW, the team slumped to fourth, and Renault went a season without a win for the first time since 2002. The team blamed misleading wind-tunnel data, while the switch from Michelin to sole supplier Bridgestone and a lack of front downforce were also cited. Its new seven-speed Instantaneous GearChange gearbox, Renault's first seamless-shift design, proved very reliable, and Kovalainen retired only once all season.
