About the Nissan Bluebird U12
The U12-generation Nissan Bluebird, known in Australia as the Pintara, was the result of 'Project Matilda', a significant investment in local manufacturing that ultimately led to Nissan's exit from Australian production in 1992. While Japanese U12 models focused on 1.8 and 2.0-litre engines, the Australian version introduced the 2.4-litre KA24E engine to provide the low-end torque preferred by local buyers. This SOHC unit, later famous in the 240SX, offered respectable performance for a family sedan but was noted for its coarse nature at high revs. The U12 was also the first Bluebird to feature the ATTESA all-wheel-drive system in high-performance Japanese trims, though the 2.4-litre Australian models remained front-wheel drive. Today, it is remembered as a durable, if unglamorous, piece of Australian automotive history.
