About the McLaren MP4/8
After Honda withdrew, McLaren built the MP4/8 around a customer 3.5-litre Ford HB V8 rated at around 680 hp, short of Williams' Renault V10, and made up ground with active suspension, traction control, two-way telemetry and a semi-automatic gearbox developed with TAG. Ayrton Senna, racing on a race-by-race contract, won in Brazil, at Monaco for the sixth time and in the rain-soaked European Grand Prix at Donington Park, and led the championship until after Canada. Alain Prost's Williams eventually pulled clear, but Senna won the final two races in Japan and Australia to finish runner-up, with McLaren second in the Constructors' Championship. Team-mate Michael Andretti struggled and left after finishing third at Monza, and Mika Häkkinen replaced him.
