About the McLaren MP4/5B
For 1990 Neil Oatley's team reworked the MP4/5 with new front and rear wings, reprofiled rear bodywork around larger radiators and new venturi tunnels in the rear floor, while Honda developed the RA100E V10 to around 690 bhp. With Alain Prost gone to Ferrari, Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger used its qualifying speed to fill the front row regularly, especially at power circuits such as Hockenheim and Imola. Ferrari's 641 was often stronger on race pace, but Senna and Berger won six races and McLaren took the Constructors' Championship. Senna clinched the drivers' title when he and Prost collided at the first corner of the Japanese Grand Prix.
