About the McLaren MP4-31

The MP4-31 used Honda's second-generation RA616H power unit and was driven by Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, with reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne standing in at one race. Alonso survived a violent crash with Esteban Gutiérrez in Australia, in which his car rolled several times and landed upside down, and the broken ribs and collapsed lung he suffered ruled him out of Bahrain. Reliability problems persisted, but the car was a clear improvement on the MP4-30, with Alonso twice finishing fifth, at Monaco and in the United States. McLaren scored 76 points to finish sixth in the Constructors' Championship, up from ninth.
