About the McLaren MP4-30
The MP4-30 reunited McLaren with Honda for the first time since 1992, using the new RA615H V6 turbo hybrid, and brought Fernando Alonso back to the team alongside Jenson Button. Designed by Tim Goss and Neil Oatley, it was nicknamed the 'size zero' car for its sharply tapered rear, made possible by a compact Honda engine designed to run at higher temperatures. Honda split the turbocharger and placed it with the MGU-H inside the vee of the engine, but the power unit lacked power and reliability, and two weeks before the opener the car's longest continuous run was just 12 laps. A best finish of fifth and 27 points left McLaren ninth in the Constructors' Championship, its most difficult season in 35 years.
