About the McLaren MP4-17D

Announced in September 2002 as an interim evolution of the MP4-17 until the radical MP4-18 was ready, the MP4-17D gained a sharper nose and revised rear wing and used the Mercedes-Benz FO110P V10, rated at 850 hp at 18,500 rpm. The MP4-18 never raced, so the D-specification car ran all season and won two early races, with David Coulthard in Australia and Kimi Räikkönen in Malaysia. Its reliability let Räikkönen contend for the title to the last round, finishing second on 91 points, two behind Michael Schumacher. McLaren placed third in the constructors' championship with 142 points.
