About the McLaren MP4/16

Designed by Adrian Newey, Steve Nichols, Neil Oatley and Peter Prodromou around Mario Illien's Mercedes-Benz FO110K V10, the MP4-16 raced in 2001, the sixth and final season Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard spent together as team-mates. The chassis was good but suffered niggling aerodynamic problems, and the Mercedes engine was less powerful than BMW's and less reliable than Ferrari's. Coulthard won two early races and challenged Michael Schumacher before holding second in the championship, while Häkkinen lost the Spanish Grand Prix to a failure while leading on the last lap, won two races and then retired. McLaren finished second in the constructors' championship with 102 points and four wins.
