About the McLaren MP4/13

Newey's all-new MP4/13 adapted best to the narrower cars and grooved tyres introduced for 1998, and the Mercedes-Benz FO110G V10 designed by Mario Illien was the most powerful engine of the season. Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard finished a lap ahead of the field in Australia, helped by a brake-steer system that let the driver brake individual wheels, until a Ferrari protest got it banned. Häkkinen won eight races and beat Michael Schumacher to the title at the Japanese finale, Coulthard won at Imola, and McLaren took its first Constructors' Championship since 1991. Coulthard said the car was fast but understeered through slow corners, because Newey's design favoured aerodynamic grip over mechanical grip.
