About the McLaren MCL34
Designed under engineering director Pat Fry, with James Key recruited from Toro Rosso to oversee development during the season, the MCL34 was powered by the Renault E-Tech 19. Carlos Sainz Jr. joined from Renault alongside Formula 2 runner-up Lando Norris, who qualified eighth on his debut in Australia. A big step on from the MCL33, the car was often the best of the rest behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, and McLaren passed 100 points in a season for the first time since 2014. Sainz finished third in Brazil for his first podium and McLaren's first since the 2014 Australian Grand Prix, helping secure fourth in the Constructors' Championship.
